The FPHA (Flexible Packaging Hygiene Association) is an independent organization established in 1975 by converter companies in order to produce packaging material in a hygienic manner.
An important duty of the association is to provide guidance that enables manufacturers to conduct hygiene control in the flexible packaging material manufacturing process according to certain standards. It is our view that the manufacturing process for flexible packaging material requires the same level of hygiene control as food and drugs.
◆ This term refers to the pretty bags or film wrapping many of the foods and drugs such as snacks, candy, and cold medicine that we see at supermarkets, convenience stores, and the like.
◆ Safe, hygienic food and drugs can only be called hygienic if they are wrapped in hygienic flexible packaging material.
◆ The Flexible Packaging Hygiene Association, by way of a factory accreditation system, delivers safe, hygienic flexible packaging material to food and drug manufacturers.
The Voluntary Standards for Hygiene Control are the basic standards formulated by the FPHA to enable member factories to manufacture and process flexible packaging material that is always hygienic and safe, using materials that are selected based on the Food Sanitation Act and industry organizations’ voluntary hygiene standards.
Since publishing the first version in 1976, the standards have been revised several times in response to amendments in the law and changes in social conditions. The standards currently in effect constitute Version 14, revised in April 2023.
Based on the Flexible Packaging Hygiene Association's view that the flexible packaging material used to directly package food and drug products requires the same level of hygiene control as that of factories that manufacture food and drugs, we established our own set of voluntary hygiene standards (Voluntary Standards for Hygiene Control). We have established a system of regularly inspecting and verifying member factories' manufacturing hygiene control and their mechanisms and equipment for maintaining hygiene.
The FPHA carries out the following seminars on a regular basis.
The “Training Seminar for Processing Hygiene Managers” is open to managers of member factories. It includes lectures by several instructors on such topics as current FPHA activity status including the revision status of our voluntary standards, legal revisions, and changes in social conditions. The objective is for the participants to understand current conditions and for them to put that understanding to good use in educating employees at their workplace.
The “Research and Development Seminar on Packaging” reaches beyond the goal of training members and invites participants from the general public as well. It aims to build interest in flexible packaging material among many people. Each seminar features guest instructors who are active in different industries, resulting in lectures that are full of variety.
All of the seminars are held in both Tokyo and Osaka, and the FPHA plans to continue hosting them in an effort to develop the interest of not only its members but those outside the industry as well. These seminars have been held in recent years as needed, either as webinars or as a hybrid of webinars and real seminars.
Factory Tours
Factory tours are held every year as well. The number of factories toured in one day is two, and the destinations are not limited to member factories but cover a broad spectrum, also including companies and organizations from different industries. By looking and checking things on the spot, participants can draw upon that experience in their future work.
Exhibiting at Expos
Promoting Flexible Packaging Materials and us
FPHA is actively involved in exhibiting at expos. We exhibit regularly at the Tokyo Pack(Tokyo International Packaging Exhibition). We also exhibited in the Japan Pack(Japan International Packaging Show), and we are widely informed of our activities within the industry.
Publishing Manuals
We publish specialized manuals such as the “Row Material Hygiene Manual,” “Control Devices Manual,” and “Material and Processing Technology Manual.” We hope that the books will be cherished by all people who are involved with flexible packaging.
Issuing Periodicals
“The FPHA Report” (Issued twice yearly)
We compile a main feature article along with things like factory visit articles, commentaries, articles contributed by a diverse team of writers, and reports on PR activities in the hopes that they will aid in the personal development of our members.
“FPHA News” (Published monthly)
We provide reports from the General Assembly, the Board of Directors, and the Accreditation Committee, announcements and reports of activities, and other up-to-date information related to flexible packaging.
